Endorphins & Hot Tubs – April is National Stress Awareness Month

Endorphins are mother nature’s natural pain and stress fighters and the soothing massage provided by a hot tub helps stimulate the release of endorphins helping to dissolve away the stress and tension of the day.  But why is the production of endorphins so important to our overall health and wellness?

Stress and pain are the two most common factors leading to the production of endorphins.   Those endorphins interact with receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain acting similarly to that of morphine and codeine without the negative side effect of those drugs – addiction.

As if the decreased feelings of pain and stress weren’t enough, the release of endorphins also leads to the feelings of euphoria as well as a control of appetite, increase of the release of sex hormones and improved immune response.  Also with higher levels of endorphins, we experience less pain and have fewer negative effects of stress.

Although the release of endorphins varies among individuals, it is known that increases are affected by increases in exercise and the consumption of certain foods such as chocolate and hot peppers.  The release of endorphins upon ingestion of chocolate likely explains the feeling of comfort and the craving for chocolates.

The use of hot water therapy also aides in the release of endorphins within the body helping to reduce the potential negative effects of stress. With the positive relaxing benefits of soaking in the swirling hot waters of a hot tub coupled with the obvious benefits of an increased release of endorphins working to provide you with maximum benefits, the regular use of a hot tub should certainly be part of one’s daily activities for improved health and wellness.

So the next time you feel increased stress starting to creep up on you, think endorphins and when you think endorphins think hot tub therapy and maybe a chocolate.  You will feel that stress drift away while your body enjoys the additional benefit of heat, buoyancy and massage all working in concert to provide the maximum benefit of  hot tub soaking!

    Happy hot tubbing
